FILM

The fifth edition of the Singapore Chinese Film Festival (SCFF) returns to showcase the finest of contemporary Chinese cinema, featuring more than 40 films across four programme sections, namely Chinese Panorama, Documentary Vision, Chinese Shorts Showcase and Restored Classics.

Over at The Arts House, festival selections include documentary films interweaving socio-historical and personal stories such as Golden Horse nominee The Road (2015) and winner of the Taipei Film Award for Best Documentary Hebei Taipei (2016).

Extending the focus on social commentary is a series of narrative feature films adapted from popular novels, such as Mr. No Problem (2016), which garnered the Golden Horse Award winner for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as Someone to Talk To (2016), which was awarded Best Screenwriter at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Concluding the festival is a film panel involving some of the most significant directors of contemporary Chinese independent documentary such as Wu Wenguang (China), Li Nien-hsiu (Taiwan) and Hui See-Wai (Hong Kong). Together, they will discuss about the processes of reconciling family tensions through their filmic practices.

Someone to Talk to 一句顶一万句

30 Apr | 4pm| Tickets available here
2016/China 中国/107min/Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles/PG

With a screenplay adapted from a hit Chinese novel A Sentence is Worth Thousands by her father, acclaimed writer Liu Zhenyun, director Liu Yulin presents a social commentary on the communication breakdowns of married couples in contemporary China in her directorial debut in the feature film genre. Centred on the tale of two siblings, one facing a divorce and one desiring marriage, and their search for true love and intimacy, the film ponders on the challenges of couplehood in finding just “someone to talk to”.

Mr. No Problem

30 Apr | 7pm | Tickets available here
2016/China 中国/144min/Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles/PG

In his feature film directorial debut, acclaimed screenplay writer Mei Feng adapts the novel Intoxicating Spring Nights by prominent Chinese writer Lao She to churn out a deliciously wicked and biting satire. By focusing on key characters at a farm, its labour management and workplace politics, the film paints a wry caricature of human nature and behaviour in a dog eat dog world.

The Taste Of Youth

1 May | 4pm| Tickets available here
2016/Hong Kong 香港/91min/Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles/PG

While the concerns of Generation X-ers typically revolve around material satisfaction, that of Generation Y and Generation Z are fixated on inner emotions and the liberty to make choices. In an attempt to bridge generation gaps, award-winning director Cheung King Wai depicts the stories and aspirations of teenagers in Hong Kong, the youth of today who represent the future of Hong Kong. Beautifully crafted, it is a letter to those who are young and to those who continue to be young at heart.

The Road

1 May | 7pm| Tickets available here

In this investigate documentary, Chinese director Zhang Zanbo acquired unprecedented access to film the implementation of a highway construction project through Hunan Province for over three years. Layering perspectives from the local population, the construction company involved and its workers, the film shines light on the abuse of power by higher authorities, rampant corruption and oppression of civilians to put forth a thoughtful commentary on the costs of economic growth in China.

After being involved in a car accident that caused a man to fall into coma, an honest small-town taxi driver becomes so overburdened with paying for the victim’s hospitalisation fees to the point of considering murder as a possible alternative. In critiquing the infuriating red tape and flaws of the criminal justice system, the film conveys a raw and sombre message of how life is cheap but compassion is expensive in China.

A Foley ArtisT 擬音

*Q&A with director

5 & 6 May | 7.30pm| Tickets available here
2016/Taiwan 台湾/100min/Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles/PG

Tracing the history of sound-making in Taiwanese films, A Foley Artist trains its lenses on Hu Ding-yi, one of very few practising Foley artistes in Taiwan who trained as an apprentice under an older generation of Foley masters in the 1950s to 1960s. Starting out as a biography of Hu, the film broadens to survey the state of Chinese film industries, in the process capturing the history of foley art and exploring future developments of sound effects in films.

2016/Taiwan 台湾/87min/Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles/M18 – Coarse Language and Nudity 粗俗语言及裸露画面

In this film chronicling her father’s life story for fifteen years, director Li Nien-hsiu crafts a thought-provoking narrative on the contradictions of armed conflict and human nature. Born in Hebei province of China, her father was a former soldier who came to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War and unexpectedly spent the past six decades settling there. Tormented by homesickness but yet fearing the nightmares of war, the elder Li never returned to his hometown again and instead poured all his energy into making up for lost time and youth.

Investigating My Father

An intimate conversation between father and son unravels as Director Wu Wenguang delves into his father’s history to understand how he strove hard to evolve from a man of traditional society, to one befitting of new and rising nation following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

Small Talk

7 May | 2pm | Tickets available here
2016/Taiwan 台湾/88min/Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles/R21

Having lived with her mother like strangers under one roof for decades, whereby the only exchanges take place when meals are prepared, director Huang Hui-chen summons the courage to sit her down and make her talk about her deepest secrets, yearnings and desires, one of which is her identity as a lesbian. But is Huang, or society in general, ready to hear what she has to say?

7 May | 4pm | Tickets available here
2010/China 中国/70min/Mandarin with English and Chinese subtitles/PG

Marriage may very well be every girl’s best dream and worst nightmare. This highly intimate depiction of the lives of three generations of women in the family of director Zhang Mengqi – her mother, grandmother and herself, reflects on the hurdles women are confronted with across the decades. Having lived through an oppressive marriage, Zhang’s grandmother held hopes for her daughter to experience a beautiful and perfect marriage. But when Zhang’s mother suffered the same fate herself, she laid those hopes onto the director herself.
