LumiNation 2020 - Orang Phebien Webisode #2: Lives after Ponthuk

The Baweanese presence in Singapore has been recorded as early as 1837, and their migration into Singapore intensified at the turn 20th century. Bawean migration is often said to be motivated by an indigenous ethos referred to as merantau. This video series will give insights to the factors influencing the migration of the Baweanese to Singapore and their integration with the various local communities to form one of the significant sub-ethnic Malay communities in Singapore today.

In the early 1970s, the Ponthuk communities were relocated to housing estates as part Singapore’s development plans. Known for being an important social institution for the Baweanese, the relocations had in one way or another impacted their way of lives. With the dispersal of the community into smaller units, how did the community adapt their lives to modern Singapore? How much of the culture and practices are retained and how has some of it evolved over time?

This webisode will be available on this page from 15 Aug, Sat, 9am and available throughout the event.
