World Lit featuring 2016 Singapore Creative Writing Resident Gitanjali Kolanad
Singapore, 1 September 2016 – Organised by The Arts House, World Lit featuring Gitanjali Kolanad will take place on 8 September 2016.
In the session moderated by poet Cyril Wong, Gitanjali will read from her published works and her upcoming first novel, which explores the world of hereditary dancers in the 1920s, just as a new morality was bringing their lifestyle to an end. Gitanjali turned to writing as an outlet of creative expression after more than 40 years as a bharata natyam dancer, teacher and choreographer. Her first short story collection, Sleeping with Movie Stars, is about a young woman’s coming of age loosely inspired by her own experience of studying bharata natyam in Madras in the 1970s.
The public can sign up for the World Lit session at bit.ly/worldlit-gitanjali. Admission is free.
One of Singapore’s most sought-after residencies, the Singapore Creative Writing Residency is co-organised by The Arts House and the National University of Singapore. The six-month programme, from August 2016 to January 2017, aims to promote creative writing in Singapore by giving emerging writers the time and place to write and work with the literary community in Singapore.
