The Arts House Unveils Musicals@The Hall
A new joint effort between The Arts House and Musical Theatre Limited
Singapore, 5 June 2009 – Lights, Music, Action!
The Arts House is thrilled to announce its latest collaboration with and arrival of Musical Theatre Limited (MTL) as the Resident Musical Theatre Company at The Hall. Slated to become a regular fixture at the 60-person dinner-theatre performance space at The Arts House, Musicals@THE HALL will be showcasing a series of musicals chosen and put together by MTL. To celebrate the new collaborative effort, MTL will be hosting an Open House on Friday, 5 June at 6.30pm at The Hall to give our supporters and friends a sneak preview of what is coming.
A one-of-its-kind production, Musicals@THE HALL showcases new works by local musicians, playwrights and composers, and with a strong emphasis on “Made-in-Singapore” musicals which are in line with The Arts House’s mission in providing platforms for Singapore artists and arts groups. Aiming at developing new musicals, MTL will be conducting Story Songs Songwriter Showcases, writing workshops and its own unique proprietary, Beat-by-Beat Incubation Program. By carrying out such activities, MTL hopes to encourage established and emerging musical theatre practitioners to create new songs, scripts and lyrics; assist them in refining and further developing their content; and eventually providing a platform to collaborate and present their works to the public through their quarterly Hallmark events.
Already in the pipeline, two Hallmark events will be showcased at The Hall this year. The first musical Lost in Transit will be staged from 3 to 6 September and MTL Musical Hitz from 20 to 22 November and 27 to 28 November. The first musical, Lost in Transit is significant to both MTL and The Arts House as this musical was one of the musicals that were presented at the first-ever Five Foot Broadway, a series of five “made-in-Singapore” musicals, produced and presented by MTL and held at The Arts House in 2005.
Mr Colin Goh, General Manager for The Arts House says: “This collaboration symbolises a reunion between The Arts House and MTL which began four years ago when MTL presented the Five Foot Broadway. The production became a very successful and holds a momentous place in our hearts. It is only apt that we take on this partnership to the next level to continue showcasing quality and local musical productions regularly at The Arts House.”
Musical theatre is a highly complex collaborative art form, which requires the combination of skills from different talents including storytelling, music and movement. The creativity of a team is absolutely vital for success, as every element must work optimally. Among the various elements that contribute to a successful musical i.e. having an inspiring book, intelligent lyrics and memorable songs are several of the key elements; these disparate pieces need to be brought together to produce a successful show. Getting a musical right is much more formidable than a regular play.
Ms Stella Kon, Chairperson of Musical Theatre Limited says: “The Hall at The Arts House will provide a platform where we at Musical Theatre Limited can pursue our creative process of developing, refining and improving new works of musical theatre. From this collaboration with The Arts House, we hope that a substantial stream of original made-in-Singapore musicals will emerge.”
For more information on the upcoming Hallmark musical events in September and November, they will be available on our website www.theartshouse.com.sg closer to the events. Do keep a lookout for these musicals coming your way soon!
