Short+Sweet Singapore: a great platform for writers. 2008 Winner Ken Kwek’s first film to be released this year.
Singapore, 3 February 2009 – In June 2008, Ken Kwek had his first ten-minute play, I’ll Have The Special, produced at Short+Sweet Singapore. In July, his full-length political satire, Apocalypse: LIVE! was staged at the 2008 Singapore Theatre Festival. And now in 2009, he’s got a feature film directed by Glen Goei coming out. It’s clear that Ken Kwek is a writer on the rise.
Short+Sweet is very proud to be the first to stage a play by Ken Kwek. I’ll Have the Special is a black comedy about a five-star restaurant that serves dishes laced with delicious poisons to those who wish to commit suicide. The play was directed by Pam Oei of Dim Sum Dollies fame, and starred acclaimed actors Dan Jenkins and Andy Tear.
Festival Director Nicole Stinton said, “We are absolutely delighted that Ken has had so much success following his participation in the 2008 Short+Sweet Festival. It’s our greatest hope that other talented writers will be inspired by his achievements.”
When asked if he would recommend participating in Short+Sweet to others, Mr. Kwek said, “Certainly, especially to new writers looking for a chance to get their works produced, and to meet fellow collaborators.”
I’ll Have the Special is also being performed at Short+Sweet Sydney 2009, which is underway at this moment. “I think the fact that it [Short+Sweet] is an international franchise is very appealing. There’s a chance to showcase your work outside of Singapore. I was delighted to learn that I’ll Have The Special will be staged in Sydney, and that a new creative team will be taking the play and interpreting it in a new way,” Mr. Kwek added.
The Short+Sweet Call for Entries and Registrations is now on from 1 February to 31 March. Writers can submit plays, directors apply to participate and actors to register for auditions.
