Brat 兔崽子 Jones Shi Kang Jun’S First Multidisciplinary Solo Art Exhibition
Singaporean singer-songwriter Jones Shi Kang Jun opens his first solo art exhibition, BRAT 兔崽子, at The Arts House from the 1st to the 7th of December 2011. Jones expresses his intimate observations on life by presenting rabbits in various forms such as acrylic on canvas paintings, sketches & illustrations, photography, video art and installation pieces, also personifying these creatures in and bringing out a human physique in a series of photographs and a short film. The reason for this unique representation of life is that the artist owns three pet rabbits and first started sketching them when he got homesick while promoting an album in Taiwan. After coming back to Singapore, Jones continued to develop works based on rabbits through his design firm, JSKJ.
In Chinese, the term 兔崽子 ( ‘son of a rabbit’) is used to refer to those who are self-centered and obnoxious. Using rabbits as muses, Jones Shi Kang Jun puts them in different situations to explore concepts like self, dreamscapes and his observations and interpretation of life.
In the exhibition, Jones demonstrates the process of the maturation of his art through the forms and themes of his artwork. In terms of execution, he experiments with increasingly complex forms of artistic expression – from sketching to painting, then to photography and finally, videography. With each new stage of progression, the subject matter explored also develops in tandem, becoming bolder, more provocative and abstract, and the style of representation is also more risqué.
The journey begins with conceptualization at the artist’s table, where sketches are strewn all over. The pieces then seem to take on lives of their own and crawl towards the wall, transforming from random sketches to exhibits proper. However even as exhibits, the concepts of the sketches are simple and straightforward and the characters are one-dimensional.
With the help of Singaporean director Randy Ang, the abstract theme of the four-part film is a distillate of the preceding sections of the exhibition, representing overcoming fear and uncertainty in the process of self-exploration to finally emerge enlightened.
Brat 兔崽子 is Jones Shi Kang Jun’s first art exhibition and a portion of the proceeds from this exhibition will benefit The Business Times Budding Artists Fund.
